## A little history of the Louvre

The Louvre began as a fortress built by King Philippe Auguste around 1190. Over the centuries it grew into a royal palace, until Louis XIV moved his court to Versailles in 1682.

It opened as a museum in 1793, during the Revolution. Almost two hundred years later, in 1989, I. M. Pei’s glass pyramid rose in the Cour Napoléon, joining the palace’s Renaissance and classical façades to a modern form.

## A Louvre elopement in the courtyard of the palace

Imagine the two of you in the great courtyard at dawn, the glass pyramid catching the first light and the palace standing all around you. The Louvre is grandeur and romance at once, and it is breathtaking with no one else there.

We plan the Louvre for the quiet hours, so the courtyard and its arcades are yours, and continue to the Tuileries and the Seine, both at the palace’s door.
